COUNTRIES INVOLVED
Unlike the USSR, Germany had allies to assist them in their attempt to capture Stalingrad and the nearing countryside. Germany was also better supplied, having a superior air support and a better armored division. Even though they had the upper hand, Germany failed to capture and control Stalingrad, not only costing them a defeat, but the destruction of the 6th army and nearly 750,000 casualties. While the USSR fought alone, German had allies such as Italy, and soldiers from conquered countries such as Croatia, Hungary, and Romania aiding them.
While the Battle of Stalingrad was considered a victory for the USSR, the price of the battle is unfathomable. An estimated 450,000 soviet troop were killed, and 650,000 wounded. Nearly 40,000 civilians of Stalingrad were killed in the battle. Nearly 750,000 axis troops were killed and wounded during the battle, of which only 6,000 returned to Germany after the war.
