ABOUT
The Battle of Stalingrad was a major battle fought between the Soviet Union and Germany during World War 2. The battle took place in Stalingrad, an industrial city located on the Volga River. While Germany’s 6th army was marching to the Caucasus, Hitler ordered them to conquer Stalingrad in fall of 1942. Brutal close quarters combat quickly followed, and the battle dragged on through the winter and into the early months of 1943. After the 6th army was decimated, the remaining German troops surrendered and the Soviet Union was victorious. However, the recapture of Stalingrad came at a price, with heavy losses to the Red army and the destruction of the 6th army. This battle ultimately ended German presence in Russia, and led to Russian advance into Nazi occupied territory. However, much of Stalingrad was destroyed in the battle.
"In 1946, at last, we returned to Stalingrad, but we found it in ruins. Anyway, there was not a single upstanding house left in the city center, but it was home, our own land." -Evgenia Siliverstova, Russia
