Results of Stalingrad
Stalingrad is one of the most important battles of World War II. It was the key battle that lead to decline of Germany on the European front. Before this battle, Germany’s Blitzkrieg took Europe by storm. They were able to conquer large amount of land, and a large amount of smaller countries, in a relatively short time. The USSR faced many challenges against Germany, who in June 1942 began Operation Barbarossa. Operation Barbarossa was the codename for the axis invasion of the USSR, attacking the country that had previously been an ally to Germany.
Operation Barbarossa was short lived, lasting from June 1942 to December 1942. The main reason for the failure to invade the USSR was due to that Germany’s 6th army got caught up in Stalingrad. The Battle of Stalingrad annihilated the 6th army and the German momentum. Germany had invested too much into Operation Barbarossa, and when the operation failed-they were unable to recover from that point. To this day, Operation Barbarossa remains the largest military operation in human history in terms of power and deaths. From then on, Germany went on the defensive, and slowly lost the land they had conquered years before.
The war on the eastern front ended with the USSR invading Berlin, the capital of Germany. Soviet troops cleared out the city, and laid waste to its inhabitants. After the invasion of Berlin, Adolf Hitler and his affiliates committed suicide. After World War II ended, Germany was split in two, divided between the United States and the USSR. The bloodiest battle of modern history ended with over two million causalities and led to the downfall of Germany, which was the turning point on the eastern front during World War II.
